Patagonia Relaunches Its Original Rugby Shirt
Patagonia has quietly re-released its foundational Long-Sleeved Rugby Shirt, the brand's first-ever apparel product, for $139.

Patagonia has brought back the garment that started it all: the Long-Sleeved Rugby Shirt. According to a report from Highsnobiety, the brand had not offered a proper rugby polo for years before this unannounced fall reissue, which is priced at $139.
The return of this core piece is seen as rectifying a notable absence in the brand's lineup. At a time when many companies emphasize their heritage, Patagonia's offering of an organic-cotton entry point into its origin story is presented as a logical move.
The Design and Drop
The re-released shirt comes in four colorways featuring traditional rugby striping and a white collar. The design is described as understated, with its significance rooted more in its history than flashy aesthetics. The drop appears to have been executed quietly, without major fanfare from the brand itself.
A Foundational Garment
The shirt's history is directly tied to Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard. Highsnobiety reports that Chouinard discovered the shirt during a 1970 rock climbing trip in Scotland. He found the rugged British boarding-school sport shirt to be perfect for climbing, as it was durable, worked well under a use, and its collar protected his neck from hardware slings.
This functional origin story is central to the item's identity. The horizontal stripes, which historically distinguished rugby kits from vertically striped football uniforms, added to its distinctive look.
From Function to Fashion
The report suggests the shirt has transcended its purely functional roots. It notes that, similar to how Patagonia has raise basic items like fleeces into fashion staples, this rugby shirt has the potential to filter into wider style circles. The brand has reissued the signature shirt intermittently in the past, including anniversary editions, but has also been known to skip it for seasons at a time.
Despite Patagonia's modern fame for technical outerwear like three-layer rain shells and packable puffers, Highsnobiety posits that this simple rugby shirt remains the brand's most quintessential piece. The fall re-release makes the foundational item available once more, just in time for what the source calls "peak long-sleeve polo season."
