The 15th anniversary Outbreak festival took place at London's All Points East in August 2026, with Deftones headlining. Dazed published a gallery of photos from the event, capturing the style of attendees from two generations of heavy music fans.

For years, the visual identity of a metal fan was heavily gatekept and uniform. The classic look of cargo shorts, tube socks, and faded festival wristbands had long defined the scene. The recent Outbreak festival served as a loud counterpoint. It demonstrated how multi-dimensional and multi-generational the style of this scene has become.

The Evolving Uniform

Despite rapid online trend cycles since the pandemic, one item connects past and present subcultures: the black platform boot. This is described as the scene's equivalent of the little black dress. Festival-goers used band tees and combat boots as a canvas. They adorned themselves with faded mullets, self-deprecating slogans, and pastel warpaint. Human-sized butterfly wings and more tattoos than ever were also part of the mix.

You can no longer guess which bands are playing just by looking at the crowd's outfits. The digitally obsessed and scene veterans came together on a dusty field in Victoria Park. They celebrated the music that unites them.

A Festival's Journey

Outbreak originated at Sheffield's Broomhall Centre in 2011. It moved to Leeds in 2012 and then to Manchester in 2022. In 2026, it came under the All Points East banner with its own dedicated day.

The lineup included Amyl and the Sniffers, Salem, Show Me the Body, and Mannequin Pussy. EsDeeKid and JPEGMAFIA also performed. Post-hardcore fan-favourites Basement played, as did horror-punk turned alternative-rock legends AFI.

Deftones' modern-day renaissance has spearheaded a massive subcultural pivot. A post-COVID online surge introduced their back catalogue to an obsessively devoted Gen-Z audience. This has helped reignite alternative music.

Platforming Fan Cultures

To the dismay of gatekeepers, heavy music is firmly on the menu. Festivals like Outbreak ensure the vast array of fan cultures are finally being platformed on a global stage. Many of these cultures were forged in digital spaces. The event posed a broader question: what does an alternative metal fan actually look like in 2026? The crowd shattered the stereotype of legacy style.
