Monterey Car Week 2026 offered a fascinating juxtaposition of automotive evolution, where the future met the past in unexpected ways. While the event featured high-tech marvels like Jaguar’s Type 01 electric concept, it also celebrated classic automotive elements such as V12 engines and manual transmissions, which are becoming rarer in today’s market.

Retro Revival Takes Center Stage

The event was a playground for throwback designs and mechanical nostalgia. Eccentrica unveiled an open-top version of its reimagined Lamborghini Diablo, while Porsche showcased the Flachbau RS, a road-legal GT2 RS inspired by the iconic 935 Moby Dick. Hennessey’s Blackbird and Gordon Murray’s S1 further embraced old-school charm, with the former featuring a naturally aspirated V8 and a six-speed manual gearbox, and the latter boasting a 12,100rpm Cosworth V12 and a central driving position.

Louis Vuitton also made waves with two bespoke Porsche 911 restorations, crafted in collaboration with Singer. These models included custom leather interiors, luggage, and removable mechanical dashboard clocks, blending vintage aesthetics with modern luxury.

Manual Transmissions Make a Comeback

Despite the industry’s shift toward automatics, manual transmissions were a recurring theme at Monterey. McLaren previewed the V8-powered McL 6GT, its first manual road car since the F1, while Spyker returned with the 800hp C8 Preliator XXV. RUF introduced the EHRA, a 650bhp all-wheel-drive model with a seven-speed manual. Ferrari unveiled the one-off SF90-based CZ26, and Lanzante confirmed a new high-downforce package for its three-seat 95-59 supercar.

Jaguar’s Futuristic Vision

Amid the retro revival, Jaguar stood out with its Type 01 electric concept. The four-seat interior featured a central spine, minimalist controls, and hidden technology, offering a glimpse into the future of automotive design.

A Balanced Showcase

Monterey Car Week 2026 successfully bridged the gap between futuristic luxury and analogue performance. The event celebrated classic automotive motifs while embracing modern innovation, proving that the future of cars can still honor the past.
