Junya Watanabe presented his SS27 collection at Paris Fashion Week on October 5, 2026. The Japanese designer's show was part of an unofficial SS27 Japan day, which also featured presentations from Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Noir Kei Ninomiya.

Thematic and visual language

The collection explored witches, punks, and cyborgs through a stark black and pink palette. Models wore an athletic, form-fitting two-piece as a base layer, similar to sportswear. Over this, most models were topped with heavy metalwear, creating a striking armor-like aesthetic. One model wore a breastplate with swords jutting out from it, while another featured short fat spikes.

Celebrity and model moments

Ciara made her catwalk debut in the show, singing along to Chaka Khan’s 'Like Sugar' during her walk. She wore three different looks, including a full-on chandelier that stretched from her head to her knees. Model Paloma Elsesser showed studded gloves, a witchy black hat worn slightly to the side, and an oversized belt punctured with silver eyelets.

The collection was described as bringing a much-needed injection of fun and frivolity to Paris Fashion Week. Isobel Van Dyke noted, "Junya Watanabe has been having a lot of fun recently." The Watanabe woman was described as not to be messed with.

Architectural design approach

Watanabe treats garments as construction problems to be solved. The collection begins with an ultra-fitted bodysuit that acts as a second skin, exposing the body’s anatomy. Artificial volumes, protrusions, and sculptural structures then reshape the bust and torso, transforming the human figure into a new form of architecture. In this vision, ornament becomes structure, not merely decorative.

Punk vocabulary is introduced through sculptural bras with spikes and studs, chains encircling the body, and pearls used as structural elements. Leather, corsetry, armour-like constructions, and deconstructed jackets create tension between aggression and elegance. Watanabe begins with wardrobe archetypes such as the biker jacket, trench coat, jeans, corset, and tailored jacket, transforming them without erasing their original identity. A biker jacket remains a biker jacket while simultaneously becoming something else.

Watanabe trained as a pattern maker at Comme des Garçons, and this technical background remains deeply embedded in his design approach. His label operates within the Comme des Garçons ecosystem while maintaining a distinct creative identity. For SS27, the body is the starting point, pattern cutting is the tool, and ornament becomes architecture.
